Content
History
The settlement, from which the city later grew, was founded in 1913 . The municipality of El Retin was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1996 .
Geographical position
The city is located in the northern part of the department, on the right bank of the Fundacion River, approximately 66 kilometers south-southwest (SSW) from Santa Marta , the administrative center of the Magdalena department. The absolute height is 27 meters above sea level [1] .
The municipality of El Retin borders in the north with the territory of the municipality of Pueblo Viejo , in the west with the municipality of Remolino , in the south with the municipality of Pivihai , in the southwest with the municipality of Fundacion , in the west with the municipality of Aracataca . The area of the municipality is 268 km² [2] .
Population
According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, the total population of the city and municipality in 2015 was 20,981 people [3] . The dynamics of the population of the municipality by years:

According to the 2005 census, men made up 52.9% of the population of El Retin, women - 47.1%, respectively. Racially, whites and mestizos accounted for 61.9% of the city’s population; Negroes , mulattoes and Raisals - 37.9%, Indians - 0.2% [4] . The literacy rate among the entire population was 80.5%.
Economics
The basis of the economy of El Retin is agricultural production .
62.5% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 27.3% are service enterprises, 9.5% are industrial enterprises, 0.7% are enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .
