Biography

Born in 1950 in Zugdidi . He graduated from the History Department of Tbilisi State University (1972). 1972 - 1975 completed a full-time postgraduate course at the Department of History of the USSR of the feudal period of MV Lomonosov Moscow State University (academic advisers: academician B. A. Rybakov , corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences A. P. Novoseltsev ); in the same place he defended ( 1978 ) a Ph.D. thesis on the subject: “ Georgia and Eastern Europe in the XI-XII centuries.” and received the degree of candidate of historical sciences. In 1982, this work was published as a separate book - “At the Origins of Georgian-Russian Political Relations” (published by TSU. Tb., 1982); in the same 1982 , for this monograph and some other publications on the history of international relations of Georgia in the XI-XII centuries, he was awarded the Komsomol Prize of Georgia.

1991 , at Tbilisi State University, defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic: “The International Situation of Medieval Georgia. 70s X century. - the 80s of the XI century. " In 1994 , the academic title of professor (TSU) was awarded.

Scientific, pedagogical and social activities

He began his career in 1976 at the Sukhumi State Pedagogical Institute. A. M. Gorky (since 1979 - Abkhaz State University), as a teacher. From 1979 to 1989 , he held the posts of teacher, associate professor, deputy head of the Department of History of Georgia-Abkhazia ASU. At the same time, from 1977 to 1984 , he acted as chairman of the Council of Young Scientists of the university. On the recommendation of a member of correspondent. Academy of Sciences of Georgia, prof. Georgy Alekseevich Dzidzaria, was elected deputy chairman of the Abkhaz organization of the All-Georgian Historical Society named after Ekvtime Takaishvili . Constantly participated in the so-called. “Borjomi meetings” - annual forums of Georgian historians.

Since 1989 - after the separation of ASU and the formation of the Sukhumi branch of Tbilisi State University named after Ivane Javakhishvili - Z. Papaskiri became the head of the Department of History of Georgia of this university and held this position until 2005 . After the transformation of the Sukhumi branch of TSU. Ivane Javakhishvili to Sukhumi State University ( 2007 ) - Head of the Coordination of Scientific Work of SSU, Professor of the Faculty of Humanities, Head of the History Department; Deputy Chairman of the Main Editorial Board of the Proceedings of Sukhumi State University and Editor-in-Chief of a series of humanitarian and socio-political sciences. In 1998 , at the initiative of Z. Papaskiri, the Abkhazian organization of the All-Georgian Historical Society named after Ekvtime Takaishvili ; he is the chairman of this organization and at the same time the chief editor of its periodical scientific publication (yearbook) - Historical Investigations In 1994 - 2006 part-time worked as a senior researcher and deputy head of the research center of the History of Georgian State and Civil Diplomacy at Tbilisi State University Ivane Javakhishvili. In the same period he was a member of the Dissertation Council for the defense of doctoral and master's theses on the history of Georgia TSU.

Since 1977 , he has constantly criticized the separatist vision of the history of Abkhazia. Since 1989 , he actively joined the Georgian national movement. He was the initiator of the creation of the Abkhaz regional organization of the All-Georgian Society Shota Rustaveli and the deputy chairman of this organization. In May 1992 , with his active participation, the Coordinating Body of the Georgian socio-political organizations of Abkhazia was created - a kind of “public parliament” - the Council of National Unity . Since 1994 , he continued active social activities. He constantly published popular science articles on the history of Georgia-Abkhazia in the periodical press. He took part in thematic broadcasts of radio and television dedicated to pressing problems of the history and current situation of Abkhazia. Of the socio-political activity, participation in the public movement “Union of Abkhazians of Abkhazia” (created in 1996 ) should be especially noted. As the deputy chairman of this organization, Z. Papaskiri led the informational and ideological direction of the activities of the Union, was the author and editor of almost all official documents of this organization. These materials (in the form of an appendix) were included in his book: “ Abkhazia is Georgia ” (Tb., 1998 , in Georgian). For this book he was awarded the State Prize of Giorgi Sharvashidze in the same year.

Scientific Heritage

Z. Papaskiri is the author of over 200 printed scientific and popular science publications (including 12 monographs and books) on the history of international relations of medieval Georgia, as well as on key issues in the history of Abkhazia. In addition to the above, his monographs and books received special recognition: “The emergence of a single Georgian feudal state and some issues of the foreign policy of Georgia” ( 1990 , in Georgian), “Essays on the History of Modern Abkhazia” (vol. I, 2004 , vol. II, 2007 , in Georgian); “And Georgia revolted from Nicopsia to Daruband” ( 2009 , in Georgian); “ Abkhazia . History without falsification ”( 2010 ); “My Abkhazia. Memoirs and Reflections ”( 2012 ); "[Georgia]]. Historical Past and Present ”( 2016 , in Georgian) and others. Z. V. Papaskiri is a co-author and member of the editorial boards of such reputable publications as“ Essays on the History of Georgian Diplomacy ”(vol. I-II, 1998 , in Georgian) and textbook “History of Georgian Diplomacy” (Tb., 2003 , in Georgian), as well as encyclopedic dictionaries: “Georgian Diplomatic Dictionary” (in 2 volumes, 1997 , 1999 , in Georgian), “Ivan Javakhishvili. Encyclopedic Dictionary ”( 2002 , in Georgian) - about 200 articles of the scientist were included in these encyclopedic publications. His works are published in Georgian, Russian, English, German and Turkish; most of them are posted on different websites.

War in Abkhazia 1992-1993

During the military confrontation in Abkhazia, he served in the headquarters of the 2nd Army Corps of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Georgia , held the position of senior officer (with the rank of captain) of the Corps personnel department. After the end of the military confrontation, he was arrested by the Security Service of Abkhazia and spent exactly 100 days (October 7, 1993 - January 14, 1994 ) spent in the isolation ward of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, was released thanks to the intervention of the scientific community and the public of Georgia and Russia .

Z. Papaskiri is married, has two children, a grandson and a granddaughter. Son - Teimuraz Zurabovich Papaskiri, Doctor of History, Professor of Tbilisi State University Ivane Javakhishvili, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of TSU, as well as the head of the Institute of General History of this faculty and the Department of Modern and Contemporary History. In 2005 - 2006 for two semesters, as part of the young lecturer program at the New York Open Society Institute, as a visiting professor, taught a lecture course at the University of Wisconsin - Oakler ( USA ). Presidential Fellowship ( 2000-2003 ) and Grant of the President of Georgia for Young Scientists ( 2009 ).
