Gondi, Henry de

Born in Paris , the son of Albert de Gondi , Duke de Retz, and Countess Claude de Clermont-Tonnerr, was the sixth of ten children in the family. He studied at the Sorbonne and received a doctorate utroque iure , in canonical and civil law, after which he chose a church career.

His uncle Pierre de Gondi occupied the chair of Paris since 1568, thanks to his patronage, Henri de Gondi took one of the leading places in the leadership of the Paris diocese, from 1587 he served as canon of the cathedral chapel of Paris, was abbot- commander of two monasteries ^[4] .

In 1597 he succeeded his uncle at the department of the Paris bishop. Henri de Gondi was the second of four consecutive representatives of the Gondi clan who occupied the Paris department for almost a hundred years.

On March 1, 1598, he received episcopal consecration, with his uncle being the chief conservator ^[5] . He occupied the chair of Paris until his death.

At the Consistory on March 26, 1618, Henri de Gondi was named Pope Paul V Cardinal , but was never able to visit Rome and personally receive a Cardinal hat. He did not participate in the conclave of 1621, which elected Pope Gregory XV ^[4] . In 1619 he became a holder of the Order of the Holy Spirit .

He died on August 14, 1622 in Paris, was buried in the chapel of Gondi in Notre Dame Cathedral ^[4] . His younger brother, Jean-Francois de Gondi, became his successor in the Paris department.
