In 1667 he became a colonel in the German infantry regiment.

On July 21 of the same year, he was appointed governor of the Duchy of Luxembourg and the county of Chini, to replace his father. He took office in 1676 or 1677. He led the defense of Luxembourg in 1684, during the Franco-Spanish War , and was forced to surrender after a month of resistance and brutal bombing.
As a reward for courageous resistance, he was appointed vice-king of Navarra on April 20, 1685; February 5, 1686 was replaced by Alexander de Bournonville . The government of Sardinia at the end of 1685 requested that de Croix be appointed vice-king of the island, but he died in Pamplona a few months after his resignation.
