Shameful rituals - popular sanctions imposed on those who committed moral misconduct.
In the Russian common people, they are mostly used against women - for violation of marital fidelity, and against men - for theft.
The most characteristic shameful rituals are trimming hair, smearing the head or the whole body, sometimes just a tar tar at the house, harnessing it to a cart, to the root or to a hairpin.
