Falluja (dam)

Fallujah ( Arabic. سدة الفلوجة ) is a dam on the Euphrates near the eponymous city in the Iraqi province of Anbar . The construction of the dam was completed in 1985. Unlike other dams on the Euphrates, Fallujah is not a hydroelectric power plant ; its main function is to increase the water level in the river to irrigate agricultural land. The dam consists of two separate parts. The main has ten gates measuring 16 by 8.5 meters, with a total discharge of 3,600 cubic meters of water per second. The second part on the left bank of the river has eight gates with a width of 6 meters, which diverts water to two irrigation canals. Their maximum flow is 104 cubic meters of water per second [1] .

The construction of the dam was first proposed in 1923 as part of a large project to increase cotton production in Iraq [2] . However, construction began much later. In order for the water not to interfere with construction, the dam was not built on the bed of the Euphrates, but next to it. To the Euphrates water dam were sent only in 1985, when construction was completed. After the invasion of Iraq by the troops of the international coalition in 2003, the dam was reconstructed [3] .

During the occupation of Fallujah by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, in April 2014, militants took control of the dam and closed its gates for several days. Later, due to flooding in the upstream areas and excessive water level in the reservoir, the gates were open [4] Also at the opening of the dam, the militants attempted to wash off the advancing Iraqi troops [5] .

On June 14, 2016, the Iraqi police chief reported that troops cleared the ISUF Fallujah dam and hoisted the Iraqi flag on its crest. The commander of the federal police said that the Iraqi forces fully control the dam [6] .
