Father Rekensensa - a doctor , mother - a teacher of English. The political idol of Rekensens is Romulo Betancourt - the former president of Venezuela, the "father of Venezuelan democracy" and a close associate of US President John F. Kennedy [1] .

Political Activities

Rekensens began to actively participate in public life while still a student. In 2011, he headed the student organization of the Central University of Venezuela [2] [3] [4] . He led his own microblog on Twitter , used it for political debate [5] . The first anti-government demonstration was held by Recensens in January 2013; students of the Central University of Venezuela and the Catholic University of Andres Bello [6] attended it . In the 2015 parliamentary elections, he was elected to the National Assembly from the party “ For Justice ”, which is part of the Round Table of Democratic Unity .

The main requirements of the Rekensens and his supporters are the release of political prisoners, a fair investigation of crimes against members of the opposition (in particular torture and killings of activists), a direct dialogue between the people and the authorities (in the form of direct television broadcasts with the country's leadership). At the same time, Rekensens opposes the early resignation of Maduro, which he calls the "dead end". According to him, such a demand only enhances the escalation of the conflict, discredits the democratic movement and allows the current government to carry out new repressions against protesters.

For such views, the Rekensens is often regarded by the media as a representative of the "moderate" opposition to the Maduro regime, in contrast to the more radical supporters of Leopoldo Lopez Mendoza [1] .

Arrest

On August 7, 2018, he was arrested in connection with the assassination attempt on President Maduro [7] . As a deputy, Rekensens enjoyed parliamentary immunity. However, the chairman of the Constitutional Assembly, Diosdado Cabello , said he would “amend the law” in order to deprive Bornes and MP Julio Borges , accused in the same case, of protection [8] . The immunity was lifted the next day [9] [10] [11] [12] .
