Story

A group of thirty enthusiastic European and American tourists traveled to Egypt in 1895. They sail up the wide Nile on the Korosko small screw steamer, intending to reach Abosir on the southern Egyptian border. Tourists dream of touching the great monuments of ancient Egypt . A few days on the road, and people from the Foggy Albion fall into the country of sphinxes and pyramids . If they only knew what dangers await them ahead ... They are undergoing an attack and abduction by marauders from among the dervish rebels.

This book is not only about their adventures, but also a psychological drama about choice, betrayal, love and honor.

Passengers

  • Colonel Cochrane from London.
  • Mr. Cecile Brown from London.
  • John Harry Hidingley from Boston, United States.
  • Miss Adams from Boston, United States.
  • Miss Sadie Adams from Worcester, Massachusetts, United States.
  • Monsieur Farde from Paris.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Belmont from Dublin.
  • James Stephens from Manchester,
  • John Stewart from Birmingham
  • Mrs. Schlesinger with a nanny and child from Florence.

The novel defends British imperialism and, in particular, in North Africa. It also shows distrust and fears on the part of many Europeans of that time towards Islam .

In the preface, the author writes:

“This story is based on the oath of Colonel Kochrein and handwritten letters to Miss Adams, a native of Boston, Massachusetts, supplemented by the eyewitness, captain Archer, who is in the Egyptian cavalry corps, and from the testimony given to him during a secret interrogation of a government agent. Mr. James Stephens refused to add anything from himself, but since he did not find it necessary to make any changes in the evidence presented to him, we must assume that he did not see any deviations from the truth in them ... ”

Later, the author’s novel was adapted into the play “Fires of Fate”. The play, in turn, was filmed, in 1923 a silent film was shot, and in 1932 a radio show was released.
