Richard Samuel Attenborough, Baron Attenborough ( born Richard Samuel Attenborough, Baron Attenborough [ˈætənbʌrə] ; August 29, 1923 - August 24, 2014 ) - British theater and film actor, film director, film producer; life peer in the rank of baron. During his lifetime he was president of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts .

Biography

Richard Attenborough was born on August 29, 1923 in Cambridge ( England ) in the family of British academician Frederick Attenborough . He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art , which he headed later until the last days of his life.

The Attenborough family was one of those who, in 1939, responded to the call of Kindertransport volunteers and took over two German-Jewish girls aged 9 and 11 named Helga and Irena Bejac. They remained in the family after the end of the war, when it became known that the parents of the children were dead [7] . In the 1950s, Helga and Irena moved to America with their uncle, got married and received American citizenship [8] . In January 1945, Richard married actress Sheila Sim .

In 1967, Attenborough was promoted to commander of the Order of the British Empire , in 1976 he received the knighthood, and in 1993 he was awarded the title of Baron for life in the United Kingdom .

At the same time, 14 years from 1979 to 1993 did not act in films [9] .

He has been the life-time vice-president of Chelsea football club since 2008 [10] .

For setting and producing the biopic Gandhi (1982), he was awarded the Oscars , Golden Globes and BAFTA .

In 2004, the eldest daughter Attenborough Jane, along with her daughter and mother-in-law, died during a tsunami in Thailand.

The last five years of his life was confined to a wheelchair after an unsuccessful fall due to a stroke. In March 2013, he was appointed to a nursing home due to deteriorating health. He died at noon on August 24, 2014, short of a week before the 91st anniversary.
