History
The settlement from which the city later grew was founded in 1770 . The municipality of El Pignon was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1915 .
Geographical position
The city is located in the western part of the department, on the right bank of the Magdalena River , at a distance of approximately 112 kilometers southwest of Santa Marta , the administrative center of the Magdalena department. The absolute height is 12 meters above sea level [1] .
The municipality of El Pignon borders in the north with the territory of the municipality of Salamina , in the northeast and east - with the municipality of Pivihai , in the southeast - with the municipality of Chibolo , in the south - with the municipality of Sapayan , in the southwest - with the municipality of Cerro San Antonio , in the west - with the territory of the Atlantic department. The area of the municipality is 547 km² [2] .
Population
According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, the total population of the city and municipality in 2015 was 16,752 people [3] . The dynamics of the population of the municipality by years:

According to the 2005 census, men made up 53.1% of the population of El Pignon, women - 46.9%, respectively. Racially, whites and mestizos accounted for 96.9% of the city's population; Negroes , mulattoes and Raysals - 3.1% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 77.6%.
Economics
The basis of the economy of El Pignon is agricultural production .
59.0% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 21.2% are service enterprises, 19.5% are industrial enterprises, 0.3% are enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .
Transport
National Highway 27 passes through the city ( Spanish: Ruta Nacional 27 ).
