Biography
Born in 1917 in Kherson in a Jewish family. In childhood, he moved to Odessa with his family.
He studied violin at the music school named after P.S. Stolyarsky. In 1941, he graduated from the Odessa Conservatory in violin class. During the Great Patriotic War he worked in evacuation in the symphony orchestra of the Kuibyshev Regional Philharmonic. He was drafted into the army, fought, awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd degree (1985). [2] After the war, in 1945-1949, he studied at the conducting faculty of the Kiev Conservatory under Professor A.I. Klimova , after which he worked in the symphony orchestra of the Odessa Regional Philharmonic. [one]
Since 1952, Leonid Katz lived in Rostov-on-Don, where he was invited to the post of chief conductor and artistic director of the Regional Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. At the same time he taught at the Rostov School of Music . The Rostov Orchestra during the years of its leadership by L. S. Katz (1952-1974), became one of the leading collectives of the USSR . In 1974, Katz left the leadership of the orchestra, and in 1983 he stopped teaching. In the following years he lived in France. [one]
He died in 1996 . In Rostov-on-Don, a memorial plaque was installed on the Philharmonicβs building, characterized in that the conductorβs stick is a separate volumetric element on its bas-relief surface.
His son - Katz Mikhail Iosifovich (born 1954) - cellist, conductor; lives in France. [3]
