In 1959, he graduated from the Geological Department of the Kazakh State University , then worked in geophysical organizations of the USSR Ministry of Geology in Kazakhstan and Belarus.

In 1971, he defended his thesis on the history of the formation of the Caspian basin.

Since 1973, he began working as a chief geologist in the regional research laboratory of the Kazakh branch of the All-Union Institute of Exploratory Geophysics (VIRG), where he was engaged in the interpretation of deep seismic studies and continued to study sedimentary basins.

From 1977 to 1991, he organized and headed the first seismic stratigraphy laboratory in the USSR at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR .

In 1990 - defended his doctoral dissertation, topic: "Sedimentary basins of Western Kazakhstan" (based on seismic stratigraphic analysis).

From 1991 to the present, he has been working as a chief researcher at the Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

Scientific activity

He is the author of more than a hundred scientific papers on the geological structure and oil and gas potential of various regions, as well as on the methodology of geological interpretation of geophysical materials, as well as four monographs, a number of consolidated tectonic maps and maps of the prospects of oil and gas potential in Kazakhstan and the former Soviet Union.

One of the creators of the unique international Atlas of paleogeographic and palinspastic maps of Central Asia.

Under his leadership, a new model of the structure of the Astrakhan carbonate massif was developed, predicting the possibility of opening large oil deposits here.

According to his recommendations, in the south of the Caspian Depression, the West Astrakhan gas field in the Astrakhan region and the Khongr gas field in Kalmykia were discovered.
