Biography
The only son of Sir Frederick Cavendish-Ponsonby , Major General, Governor of Malta (1827-1836) and Emily Charlotte, daughter of Henry Bathurst, 3rd Earl Bathurst .
At the end of 1842 he joined the ensign in the Royal Berkshire Regiment of the British Army. In 1844 he was transferred as a lieutenant to the regiment of the Grenadier Guard , the captain - since July 1848. From 1847 to 1858 he served as adjutant to J. W. Clarendon .
Lieutenant Colonel of the Grenadier Guard participated in the Crimean War , fought on the Alma River , near Inkerman and Sevastopol . For courage and skillful actions on the battlefield, he was awarded a large cross of the Order of the Bath and the Turkish Order of Medzhidiy 3rd degree.
After the war, he served as the stablerun of Prince Consort Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha , who greatly appreciated him.
In 1860, he became a colonel, and in 1862, after the death of the prince, he was sent to Canada by the commander of the battalion of the Grenadier Guard , which was stationed in the colony during the American Civil War .
In March 1868 he was awarded the title of Major General.
He was the royal financial secretary.
He died of paralysis in East Keyes on the Isle of Wight .
