Bogdan-Pitesti, Alexandru

Alexander Bogdan-Pitesti ( rum. Alexandru Bogdan-Pitești ; at birth - Alexander Bogdan ; June 13, 1870, Pitesti - May 12, 1922, Bucharest ) is a Romanian poet - symbolist , publicist , art and literary critic . He was also known as a journalist and left-wing political agitator. A wealthy landowner, he was engaged in charity work, becoming a well-known philanthropist and art collector. He was one of the main Romanian propagandists of contemporary art , and was also the sponsor of the Romanian symbolist movement. Together with other post-impressionist figures and symbolists, Bogdan-Pitesti founded Societatea Ileana , which became one of the first Romanian organizations dedicated to promoting the avant-garde and independent art. He was also known for his friendship with writers Joris Karl Güismans , Alexander Macedonski , Tudor Argezi and , and he was the sponsor of many other cultural figures, in particular the artists Stefan Lukyan , Konstantin Artachino and Nicolae Vermont. In addition to his literary and political activities, Alexander Bogdan-Pitesti was also a painter and graphic artist.

Most of the controversial political career of Bogdan-Pitesti, in connection with his support of anarchism , was devoted to activism and support for the revolution.

Bogdan-Pitesti was also interested in occultism and maintained close contacts with Joseph Peladan , sponsored his trip to Bucharest (1898). He was repeatedly arrested by the authorities, including for incitement to rebellion during the 1899 election, and was later found guilty of blackmailing banker Aristide Blank.

At the end of his life, Bogdan-Pitesti published the daily Germanophile newspaper Seara , and also led the literary and political circle, which opposed the participation of Romania in the First World War on the side of the Entente . He was arrested for the last time after the end of the war, by which time he managed to become an object of public hatred. Riddles and contradictions in the career of Bogdan-Pitesti are still of interest to many art and literature historians.
