Biography

Khidulf, a native of a noble Neustrian family, at the very beginning of the 7th century became the head of the Rouen Archdiocese. According to medieval archbishop's lists, the earliest of which dates back to the 9th century, the predecessor of Khidulf was Saint Melantius , and the successor was Saint Roman [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] . The exact date of receipt by Bishop of Khidulf is not known. Melantius of Rouen was last mentioned in modern sources in June 601 [6] . It is assumed that he died shortly after this: perhaps in the same year or already in 604 [1] [3] [4] .

Medieval authors very briefly mention the character of Khidulfa. In the treatise " Acta archiepiscoporum Rotomagensium ", compiled at the turn of the 11th – 12th centuries in the abbey of St. Uen , he was called a prudent and honest prelate [1] . Warder Vitaly, who wrote a little later, in “ ” supplemented this testimony only with a statement about Khidulf’s love for preaching the word of God among his flock [2] .

In 614, Hidulf participated in the in Paris . More than seventy bishops attended the synod, convened at the initiative of the ruler of the Frankish state, Hlotar II , including the suffragan of the Rouen Metropolitanate: Leodovald of Bayeux , Hildoald of , Hamnegizil and Launamund of , Erminulf iz Ev Marcellus from Xie [4] [7] .

The date of the death of Hidulf in medieval sources is not reported. According to the Orderik Vitaly, Khidulf ruled the Rouen Archdiocese for twenty-eight years [2] . On this basis, it is assumed that the bishop was to die at the turn of the 620s-630s. However, perhaps Khidulf died a few years earlier, since he did not participate in the all-Frankish church council , held in Clichy in 626 or 627 [7] [8] . 626, 628, or 631 years are mentioned as possible dates for the intronization of the successor of Khidulf at the episcopal department, St. Roman [1] [3] [5] .
