On February 15, 1945, Manchester United head coach Walter Crickmer resigned, and four days later, on February 19, 1945, Scott Bas Matt took his place. However, Busby officially began work only on October 1, 1945.
In connection with the end of World War II, it was decided to resume official football tournaments in England. The first post-war FA Cup was held in the 1945/46 season, while the Football League was resumed only the following season. In the FA Cup, United lost to Preston North End in a replay of the fourth round [4] .
