Many of the players, including Manchester United, went to military service, but for those who stayed, the Football League organized a special tournament, the Military League. Initially, the Military League consisted of two regional divisions (Manchester United played in the Northern Division). No points were awarded for victories and draws; places were allocated according to the ratio of the average number of goals scored to goals conceded. Manchester United finished the season with 14 wins, 8 draws and 13 losses. The club also played in the Military Cup of the Football League , in which it lost to Everton in the first round.
