Life and work
Gerard Zegers studied painting with Abraham Jansens . In 1608/1609 he received the qualification of a master and after that in 1611-1621 he went on a study trip to Italy and Spain. The main interest for him is the painting of the school of Caravaggio . In Rome, he studies the work of Caravaggio, as well as his older colleagues Bartolomeo Manfredi and Gerrit van Honthorst . After this, Zegers worked for a long time in Spain, then returned to his homeland in Flanders (then the Spanish Netherlands). Beginning in 1625, the work of Peter Zegers was greatly influenced by the work of Peter Paul Rubens , whose style is clearly recognizable on the canvases of Zegers since 1630. The artist creates numerous altar paintings for churches and monasteries of Flanders, Germany, for the Jesuit Order. In works on domestic and moral subjects, one can guess the influence of Caravaggio and his entourage.
The most famous work of G. Zegers is located in the Cathedral of St. Mary in Bruges altar canvas Adoration of the Magi (1630). A significant portion of religious paintings was influenced by Rubens. At the same time, the painting The Adoration of the Magi , stored in Mexico City, is sustained in the canons of mannerism . Many works of G. Zegers were not preserved. The brother, Gerard, Daniel Zegers , was a well-known master of still life, who also created copies of paintings by Rubens and his student, Anthony van Dyck .
The works of Gerard Zegers can be seen in museums and art galleries in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Vienna, Paris, Madrid, Bruges, Berlin, Marseille, Rome, Copenhagen, Cologne, Lille and others.
