Ava ( jap. 阿 房 国 Ava no kuni ) or Asyu ( jap. 阿 州 ) is a historical region of Japan , corresponding to today's Tokushima prefecture on Fr. Shikoku Belonged to the Nankaido region . Bordered with areas of Tosa , Sanuki and Io .
The region was formed in the VII century . In ancient times, the name of the region was written with the hieroglyph 粟, but in 712 the spelling was replaced with two hieroglyphs 阿波. The ancient capital of the region was supposedly close to the place where today the city of Tokushima is located.
The name is preserved in the name of the festival Ava-Odori (Ava's dance).
