Story

The original novel was very progressive for its time, condemning slavery , which was abolished in Brazil only 13 years later - in 1888 . The plot of the film is dedicated to the history of the struggle for love and freedom. The main character, Izaura, a slave, is a quarter , who has to go through many trials before she finds the long-awaited happiness with her loved one. But the theme of the series also affects the plight of the blacks of Brazil in the middle of the XIX century (for a reason, “Isauru” was even called the Brazilian “ Uncle Tom’s Cabin ”).

In series 65, Isaur offers an escape to the United States, where, in her words, slavery has been canceled for three years. From here it becomes clear that the action takes place in 1868. Before the abolition of slavery in Brazil at that time, there were still twenty years left, and before the official abolition of slavery throughout the world - 113 years .

In the original version, the series consists of one hundred 25-minute episodes. For international hire, as is often practiced at Globo, the series was shortened and re-edited to 30 half-hour series.

International Rental

The film was successfully screened around the world and became one of the first Western films broadcast in the countries of the "Eastern bloc." The series also became the best-selling telenovela in the history of Brazilian TV .

To rent a series in the USSR, the telenovela was remounted into a format more familiar to the Soviet television viewer - 15 episodes of 60-70 minutes each. The first 5 episodes of the television series were shown on Central Television on October 16–20, 1988, and continued from February 26 to March 7, 1989. In September 1990, at the request of viewers, the Central Television television series was re-shown [1] . The series, its characters and plot became a cult. Residents of the country vividly discussed the ups and downs of the plot. After the film was shown in the Union , the word “hacienda” firmly entered into use , mainly for the ironic designation of suburban areas of 6-10 acres . The musical motif of the film was interwoven into several fashionable popular songs (for example, the exotic pop duo Kar-Man used the musical theme of the film in the song “African Guy”).

In 1997-1998, the television series was shown by the Russian television channel TV-6 [2] [3] . In 2005, TNT began a series reiteration of the series, this time the audience was shown all 100 of the original Izaura episodes (from August to December 2005). In 2016, the Domashny television channel showed the series for the May holidays in an abridged version: May 2 (from series 1 to 15) and May 3 (from series 16 to 30) [4] [5] . Once again, the series was shown in early 2017, January 4-5 (30 episodes). In total, in Russia the series went through four channels, and on each was in a new scoring .

Remake

In 2004, another Brazilian broadcaster, Rede Record , made a remake . The series was also attended by actors who starred in the 1976 version, including Rubens di Falku , this time playing the role of commander of Almeida, father of Leoncio.

Prequel

In 2016-2017, a 159-series backstory entitled “Slave Mother” (Escrava mãe), which describes the life of mother Isaur, was published on television.
