The World Winter Special Olympics 2017 ( Eng. 2017 Special Olympic World Winter Games ), officially the 11th World Winter Special Olympics, is a multisport competition organized by the Special Olympics in Austria and held from 14 to 25 March 2017 [1] .

On October 12, 2012, it was announced that the games would be held in Austria, in the cities of Graz and Schladming [2] . Opening and closing ceremonies were shown in the USA by ABC and ESPN, a significant part of the competition was shown live and recorded by ESPN [3] .

On March 16, 2017, a meeting was held with 113 teams at the Vienna City Hall, where group photos were taken, and team members gave interviews to various channels. Such a meeting was the first in the history of Special Olympics.

On March 14, 2017, almost all athletes arrived at Vienna International Airport, where all participants were presented with special necklaces as symbols of participating in the games. However, the teams of Ghana and Afghanistan were denied a visa, so they were not at the Games. The International Committee of the Special Olympics expressed its dismay that the teams of Afghanistan and Ghana would not be able to participate. Earlier, the team from Ghana received a message that their entry visas were canceled by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Ghana, representing the interests of the Austrian government, and that athletes will not be able to return to Ghana after the competition. Chairman of the Special Olympics Council, Tim Schriver, called the incident for six athletes a nightmare [4] .

The opening took place on March 18, 2017, the games were opened by the President of Austria Alexander van der Bellen . Schladming's children choir was performed by American singers Jason Mraz and Grace Vandervoll , performing the song " I Won't Give Up " . After them, Helena Fisher performed the song " Fighter " . 119 athletes presented Russia, in 10 days Russia won 87 medals (33 gold, 41 silver and 13 bronze) [8] (according to other sources, 94 medals - 41 gold, 33 silver and 20 bronze). Among the winners stand out [9] :
- three-time champion in skiing Christina Kuzmina (2.5 km and 5 km free style, 4 x 1000 km relay free style)
