Biography
Born in the family of writer and teacher Joao di Barrusha. He was a paternal grandson of the 1st Viscount Marinha Grande .
For a long time he was a professor at the Higher Agricultural Institute of the University of Lisbon (1939-1947 and 1957-1974), from which he graduated with a degree in licentiate and from the Technical University of Lisbon. In the late 1930s. participated in the technical design of the agricultural colony of Santo Isidro di Pegoins (1937/38).
For many years he was in opposition to the New State of Salazar, took an active part in various initiatives, organizations and movements against the ruling authoritarian regime. He was a member of the left semi-legal Movement for Democratic Unity, and since 1974, the Socialist Party .
In 1974, as state minister, he entered the first democratic government of Portugal. He was also a member of the State Council (1974-1975), chairman of the National Planning Council.
In 1975-1976 - Chairman of the Constituent Assembly of Portugal. In this post he took an active part in the adoption of the new Constitution of the country (1976).
In 1976-1977 - Deputy Prime Minister of Portugal.
In 1981, he left the ranks of the Socialist Party and since 1985 began to cooperate with the Party of Democratic Renewal.
Awards and titles
He was awarded the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Christ (1978), the Grand Cross of the Order of Freedom (1980) and the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante don Enrique (2016, posthumously).
