Kovalenker, Vladimir Alexandrovich

In 1965 - graduated from the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute named after S. Ordzhonikidze , mining engineer-geologist "Geology, search and exploration of mineral deposits."

Since 1970 - works at IGEM RAS .

In 1973 he defended his thesis on the subject: “Mineralogy and geochemistry of tellurium selenium in copper-nickel deposits of the Talnakh ore cluster”.

In 1995 - defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic: “Mineralogical and geochemical laws of the formation of epithermal ores of gold and silver”, Geology, prospecting and exploration of deposits.

It conducts research on the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of endogenous ores of noble, non-ferrous and rare metals, with particular attention to epithermal and porphyry deposits.

The most important research results:

• more than 50 new natural compounds of Au, Ag, Pt, Pd and other metals with sulfur, selenium and tellurium were discovered and studied for the first time in ores of the studied deposits, 10 of which are approved by CNMMN IMA as new minerals, several new varieties of minerals are described, and for the first time in the territory the former USSR, Bulgaria and Slovakia, more than 20 rare sulfides, sulfosalts and tellurides have been identified;
• The main regularities of the fluid regime of the formation of heterogeneous epithermal deposits have been identified;
• the leading role of heterogenization and fluid mixing, as mechanisms determining the sequence of mineral formation, the concentration of metals, mineralogical and geochemical and texture zoning, is substantiated;
• The reasons for the formation of epithermal ores unique in mineralogical diversity and Bonanzian accumulations of gold and silver in them are considered;
• the special effect of variations in the activity of chalcogenides (S, Se, Te) and oxygen on the behavior of Au and Ag in the ore-forming process and the formation of mineral associations with the predominance of either sulfides, or selenides, or tellurides is shown;
• the concept of porphyry-epithermal ore-forming systems, responsible for the metallogeny of ore regions with porphyry and epithermal mineralization, is substantiated.
