REBASE (from the English R estriction E nzyme Data base ) is a database containing information on restriction endonucleases , DNA methyltransferases, and other components of restriction-modification systems [1] . REBASE contains an extensive set of links, recognition and cleavage sites, sequences and structures, as well as information on the commercial availability of each enzyme. REBASE is one of the oldest biological databases; it has its roots in the collection of restrictase enzymes collected by Richard Roberts before 1980 [2] . Since then, the journal Nucleic Acids Research regularly publishes descriptions of this database [3] [4] .
