Biography
From school years he was friends with Karl Gutskov , the future writer and leader of the literary movement " Young Germany ".
Before practicing journalism, he worked in trade for a while. In 1831, he began to publish a satirical newspaper Don Quixote (Don Quixote), banned by the authorities in 1833 because of the revolutionary statements printed on its pages. Then, under the pseudonym Adolph Brennglass (Adolf-Magnifying Glass), created with his periodicals, a new humorous trend in Berlin.
In 1848, Glasbrenner took up active political activities, became the leader of the Democratic Party in Strehlitz . During the revolution of 1848 he defended republican positions. He was expelled from Prussia in 1850 and settled in Hamburg , where he remained until 1858. Back in Berlin, he edited the newspaper Montagszeitung Berlin.
Creativity
He published a series of stories about Berlin life, entitled “Berlin wie es ist undtrinkt” (with illustrations, 1833–1849) and “Buntes Berlin” (with illustrations, Berlin, 1837–1858), through which he became the founder of popular satirical literature with his modern Berlin.
Adolf Glasbrenner is justly considered, in his harsh, lively and folk-style manner, “the father of Berlin wit”. In the same vein, written by his "Leben und Treiben der feinen Welt", "Berliner Volksleben", "Bilder u. Träume aus Wien. His two most remarkable works are Verbotene Lieder (1843) and the comic epic Neuer Reinecke Fuchs (1845). His other compositions are: Komischer Volkskalender, Die verkehrte Welt, Kaspar der Mensch, Komische Tausend u. eine Nacht "and others.
He has published several wonderful books for children, in particular, Lachende Kinder (14 editions, 1884) and Sprechend Tiere (20 editions, 1899).
