Overview

Relations between Kenya and Sudan are tense [1] . Kenya, like other countries in the Great Lakes region ( Burundi , Democratic Republic of the Congo , Rwanda , Tanzania , Uganda ) openly supported the People's Liberation Army of Sudan , which is currently the ruling party of South Sudan . Kenya received refugees from the region; also, according to some reports, supplied the rebels with weapons during the first Sudanese civil war . External support from the People’s People’s Movement negatively affected relations in general between Sudan and the countries of the region, including Kenyan-Sudanese relations [2] . Kenya monitored compliance with the ceasefire signed by South Sudan and Sudan. Subsequently, this became one of the reasons for the independence of South Sudan, as well as one of the reasons for the end of the second civil war .

In 2010, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir returned after a visit to Nairobi , while the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for his arrest. In November 2011, the Kenya Supreme Court also issued an arrest warrant for Omar al-Bashir, announcing that the President of the Sudan will be arrested if he arrives in Kenyan territory. This incident led to a deterioration in relations between the two countries in the diplomatic sphere [1] .
