Customs pfennig ( him. Zollpfennig ) - a copper coin of the Elector Palatinate minted in 1766 during the reign of Charles IV Theodore . Its feature was the nominal designation "ZOLLPFENNIG". When trading in the state, it was equal to 1½ pfennigam, while paying customs duties - to 1 pfennig . Thus, an increase in customs duties was achieved [1] [2] [3] .
In 1777 in Hesse-Darmstadt a coin was issued with the denomination of “Zollpfennig”. This was due to the fact that officially in the state used a 20- gulden coin foot (20 guilders were issued from one Cologne silver grade ). At the same time, the neighboring German states used a 24-guilder foot, which created many inconveniences in monetary circulation. Official institutions, such as customs and state cash, were required to follow the officially accepted relationship of monetary units. As an attempt to simplify calculations in the conditions of simultaneous circulation of the same currency with different nominal values, “customs pfennigi” were issued. They corresponded to ¼ kreutzer ( 1 ⁄ 60 guilders) on a 20-guilder foot [4] .
