Biography

Valery Vladimirovich Kalinchak was born on February 26, 1944 in the city of Fergana ( Uzbek SSR ). He started schooling in 1950 in Drohobych . In 1952 , the family moved to Odessa , where he graduated from school in 1960. In the same year, he entered the Physics Department of Odessa State University (now the I. I. Mechnikov Odessa National University ), graduated with honors in 1965 and with the qualification of a physicist , thermal physicist . After graduation, in January 1966 , V.V. Kalinchak was drafted into the ranks of the Soviet Army. After a year of service, he began to study in graduate school. Since October 1968, V.V. Kalinchak was selected by competition as an assistant to the Department of Thermophysics of I.U. Mechnikov OSU , later he worked as a senior teacher at the department.

In 1978 , V.V. Kalinchak defended his thesis "Combustion of drops of binary mixtures in a stream", and in 1980 he was elected to the post of assistant professor of the Department of Thermophysics. In 1983 , he was awarded the title of Associate Professor of the Department of Thermophysics.

In 1996 , V.V. Kalinchak defended his doctoral dissertation "High-temperature heat and mass transfer and critical phenomena during phase and chemical transformations in dispersed systems." Since October 1, 1996 , he has been working as the head of the Department of Thermophysics at I. I. Mechnikov OSU .

Scientific activity

The scientific activity of V.V. Kalinchak began in 1960 with a biophysical circle, led by K.K. Demidov, and the initiator was V.E. Glushkov. In 1962 , V.E. Glushkov hired V.V. Kalinchak to work in the Aerosol Problem Laboratory, whose supervisor was V. A. Fedoseyev, and A. V. Gernet headed the laboratory. The first scientific work was related to the oxidation of magnesium in water vapor. In 1963-1964 He worked as a laboratory assistant in the group of V.I. Glukhov, was engaged in experimental studies of the ignition, combustion, and extinction of metallized mixed systems and gunpowder, along with classmate B. A. Altois. In 1965, at the All-Union Conference on Evaporation, Combustion, and Gas Dynamics, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Odessa State University , he made a presentation entitled “The Impact of Metallic Impurities on the Burning of Gunpowder.”

Consultations of such outstanding scientists as O. M. Todes, B. V. Deryagin, meetings and conversations with M. L. Fuchs, D. E. Fedoseev had a great influence on the formation of the scientific worldview of V. V. Kalinchak.

In the future, the circle of scientific interests of V.V. Kalinchak expanded: these are the evaporation of droplets of hydrocarbons in water, the combustion of metal particles and metal hydrides, the processes of stability of heat and mass transfer during combustion of a droplet in a stream.

Since July 1967 , V.V. Kalinchak was the deputy head of the scientific group (leader E. Glushkov), which went on an expedition to the Krasnoyarsk Institute of Forest and Timber. 50 km from Krasnoyarsk in the forest, the group carried out tests to prevent and extinguish fires using the method of superheated water with the addition of hygroscopic substances. The high efficiency of using the superheated liquid method to prevent and extinguish fires has been proven.

In 1968 - 1970 V.V. Kalinchak carried out scientific research on the management of evaporation, combustion and extinction of liquid fuels by changing their composition. The first results of the work were published in scientific collections "Physics of Aerodispersed Systems" (1972, Issue 6, 7). A great influence on the cycle of work on the combustion of droplets of liquid fuels in the stream was played by the advice of D.I. Polishchuk, the then head of the department of general physics, and A.M. Todes. The first helped with the formulation of experimental studies, the second with the theory of stability of heat and mass transfer processes, the kinetics of evaporation, and the chemical transformation of droplets of liquid fuels in a stream. Criteria were obtained that made it possible to determine the critical conditions for the ignition and extinction of liquid droplets in a stream, and to describe the hysteretic regimes of their combustion.

In 1972 - 1973 V.V. Kalinchak completed a series of studies on the influence of metal impurities (CuO, Cu2O, CuO4) on the combustion characteristics of pressed mixtures based on ammonium perchlorate and polystyrene. These works V.V. Kalinchak completed during a scientific internship at Szeged University. I. Attila at the Department of Physical Chemistry.

From 1974 to 1980 , he continued research on the combustion of jets of liquid fuels of various compositions, metal particles coated with various films, and metal hydrides. In the 80s. The main direction of scientific work is associated with theoretical and experimental studies of high-temperature and hysteresis modes of heat and mass transfer and combustion of carbon particles and torches of metal particles formed as a result of the destruction of materials. An important aspect of these works is the study of the fire hazard of hot metal particles. Methods and instruments were developed that allow for disperse analysis and spectrometric measurements during the combustion of a particle torch.

As part of a scientific school, led by Professor V. A. Fedoseyev, in the 80s. a scientific direction was created in the physics of low-temperature plasma with a condensed dispersed phase, headed by Professor M.N. Chesnokov.

In the 90s. the scientific direction of the Department of Physics of Thermal Phenomena during phase and chemical transformations in aerodispersed systems was formed, the actual leader of which was V.V. Kalinchak. Today Valery Vladimirovich is the head of the scientific school "Heat and electrophysical phenomena in multiphase media." The main theme of these works is experimental and theoretical studies of the burning properties of hot metal particles, the stability of heat and mass transfer during the combustion of droplets and particles in a stream, a detailed study of the role of various mechanisms (heat transfer by radiation, heat and mass transfer by the Stefan flow, heating by laser radiation or electric current, internal diffusion and internal reaction in porous particles, etc.) in the processes of inflammation, combustion, and unauthorized extinction of a gas suspension of particles. V.V. Kalinchak developed a method that allows one to determine stable high-temperature and hysteretic combustion regimes of droplets and particles, and investigated the reaction mechanisms with gases. A study of these processes in 1995 was supported by the International Renaissance Foundation as part of the ISSEP Soros Program. Professors M. N. Chesnokov, N. Kh. Hoofs, associate professor S. G. Orlovskaya, and graduate student Yu. V. Prudnikova took an active part in the program.

V.V. Kalinchak is the author of more than 100 scientific papers, co-author of patents, discoveries and inventions:

Today V.V. Kalinchak is the supervisor of two state budget topics. V.V. Kalinchak is a member of the Specialized Councils for the defense of dissertations at ONU. I. I. Mechnikov, executive editor of the collection of scientific works "Physics of Aerodispersed Systems", mentor of the academic group of thermophysicists of the Faculty of Physics.
