Cherokee phoenix

Cherokee Phoenix ( Cherokee Дж ᏧᎴᎯᏌᏅᎯ, Jalagi Julehisanykhi , Eng. Cheroke Phoenix ) is the first American newspaper published by the Indians . It was published from 1828 to 1835 , when it was banned by the authorities of the State of Georgia , in two languages: English and Cherokee , and the syllable script developed by the leader Sequoia was used. The newspaper was published by Gallegina Uechi (aka , 1800–1839), a Cherokee Indian who became a Christian missionary (also known as the translator of the New Testament into Cherokee). The newspaper made a significant contribution to the development of the literary language of Cherokee.

Currently, the eponymous newspaper is published by the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma .
