Life

The Rev. Jacob Zheleznoborovsky was the son of the boyar Anosov (Amosov), who owned land in Galich Kostroma . From a young age, being aspired to God, he came to the monastery of Sergius of Radonezh and received monastic tonsure from him. He lived for several years in the Sergius Monastery , and in 1392 he retired to a remote area called Iron Borok, on the banks of the river Tebza . Here, Jacob became famous for his holy way of life.

In 1415, the great Moscow prince Vasily Dmitrievich suffered a misfortune. His wife Sofia Vitovtovna (later in the schema of Syncliticia) was seriously ill before childbirth. The Grand Duke sent Jacob Zheleznoborovsky to ask for prayer help and inform whether his wife would be alive. The saint answered that the wife would be alive and give birth to a son, and, in turn, asked the prince to pray to the holy martyr Longinus . Everything turned out well, and the born baby Vasily eventually became the Grand Duke Vasily Vasilyevich .

In gratitude for the help, Prince Vasily Dmitrievich donated a large sum of money to Jacob to build a monastery with a temple, and soon a new Orthodox monastery, called Zheleznoborovsky , appeared on the banks of the Tebza River. In 1429 , after the attack of the Tatars, the monastery lay in ruins and the Monk Jacob had to rebuild the monastery again. The reverend, together with the brethren, built a church in the name of St. Nicholas and dug up household ponds. The newly rebuilt monastery began to live according to a strict charter taken from the monastery of St. Sergius of Radonezh. In the famine, many poor needy were fed on the farmstead.

Many years later, the monastery’s brethren begged Saint James to take the abbot . As a deep old man, Saint James of Zheleznoborovsky died in his monastery and was buried in the Church of St. John the Baptist.

Honor

The official church establishment of the local memory of Jacob Zheleznoborovsky took place until 1628 , and the first church chapel dedicated to the memory of Jacob existed already in 1635 (in the Borisoglebsk church of the city of Galich). About 50 cases of healing the sick at the relics of St. Jacob Zheleznoborovsky are known, among which were the possessed Nifont and the monk Theodosius, who lay there relaxed [1] for three years and recovered only after he had promised the relics of the saint not to leave the monastery. These events are associated with the writing of a special icon of St. Jacob with 15 hallmarks that depicted the most famous healings (after the monastery was closed during the years of Soviet rule, the icon disappeared). Previously, St. Jacob Zheleznoborovsky’s Day was celebrated on December 1, and this was dedicated to updating the icons of the saint.

The relics of the Monk Jacob were found incorrupt on May 5, 1613 . At present, they rest in hiding behind the left choir of the cathedral church of the monastery.

The last miracles were recorded in the early twenties of the XX century , when hieromonk Joasaph (Sazonov) served a moleben at the relics of the saint. These events served as the basis for the arrest in 1924 of Hieromonk Joasaph and his accusation of committing "fraudulent acts using the religious prejudices of the masses of faith" [2]
