Publication History
Old Leis was created by Brian C. Vaughan and artist Adrian Alfon and made her debut by attacking other characters in Runaways vol. 1 # 2. [2] Old Leys was given the name Gertrude Yorks after she codenamed Arsenik, creating a pair of Arsenik and Old Leys, which is a reference to the film of the same name . [2] Old Leys originally belonged to Hertha's parents. The dinosaur was genetically engineered to obey all Gertrude’s commands, [3] that is, whenever Hertha thought or felt something, so did the dinosaur. [3] It was initially believed that the Velocrapist , she was later correctly identified as Deinonychus Victor Manchey . Because of the psychic connection they share, Gertrude and the Old Leis share emotions and physical pain, so if the Old Leis had a cut or was injured (which often happens), Hertha would have to endure her pain. [4] After Hertha's death, a psychic connection was transferred to Chase Stein . [four]
Fictional Biography
First appearance
Old Leis was genetically engineered in the 87th century, a project commissioned by Dale and Stacy Yorks, Gertrude's parents. [4] At the request of the parents, the designer also entered several character traits that included tele-empathic ties with Gertrude, and were also unable to harm any of her immediate family, [4] as it was discovered when Gertrude orders Old Leku to attack his parents and Old Lek refuses. [5] Old Leys was originally intended to be part of Hertha’s inheritance when her parents die, but Gertrude and the rest of the fugitives stumbled upon her during a search in the Yorks basement, when they looked for a girl to witness the murder of which they became their parents ...
Old Lace has a telepathic connection with Hertha. This allows her to feel each other's thoughts and pain and allows Old Lek to act on Hertha's emotions. [3] Old Lek got her name from Hertha Yorks, who temporarily used Arsenic as her code name (essentially creating a pair of Arsenic and Old Leys after the play and film of the same name). Although Gertrude later dropped the code name, deciding that some things from her parents (such as her real name) deserve attention, the name Old Leis remains. [1] During their last meeting with Pride, Old Leis fell briefly under the control of Alex Wilder, while Gertrude was unconscious, but Gertrude quickly regained control when she regained consciousness. [6] Seconds before Hertha’s death, she was able to transfer a telepathic connection with Old Lace to her boyfriend Chase Stein, since her death would kill Old Lace through their telepathic connection. [7] Although the Old Lace now has a telepathic connection with Chase, [2] she showed some kind of free desire. This is first shown when Old Leis attacks a vampire named Topher, despite Gertrude telling her to stop [8] and again when Chase contacts Nico and Old Leis growls and tries to stop Chase. [2]
Apparent Death
Chase, after the death of his girlfriend, used the Old Leis
In Runaways Vol. 3 # 11, first issue written by Katherine Immonen and drawn by Sarah Picelli, Chase, Nico, Victor and Carolina. An external source manages to send a drone flying to Malibu’s house, in the living room on the top floor, where Klara and Old Lays are lying. Nico, Victor and Carolina are in a hurry to save Clara and Old Leisa - however, reaching the summit, it turned out that Old Lace heard the approach of the UAV, but he had enough time to protect Clara with her body. Old Leis manages to defend Clara, but as a result he dies. [9]
In issue No. 13, Molly notes that the body of the Old Lace is absent.
In No. 14, Chase sees a girl similar to Hertha. Before he runs out into the street and gets hit by a truck, the girl shouts to him to stop. Behind her in the shadows you can see a dinosaur.
Years later, the Avengers Academy showed that Old Leys was actually simply transferred to another dimension, where she was alive and well, and the rest of the team saved her. However, she is not in very good health, since she did not see Chase and did not eat food. [ten]
Strengths and Abilities
Although she was a normal dinosaur, she showed a good level of intelligence. In the first volume, Old Leis followed Gertrude and the group while they traveled around Los Angeles after they discovered dinosaurs in the basement of her parents. She easily defeated the superheroine Dagger due to her immunity to her light daggers. She was also helpful when they first encountered Pride, shooting Stane, and in their second battle, when she defeated Mr. Hayes, and in their last battle with Pride, she helped remove Carolina's parents. It should also be mentioned how she destroyed some of the crew members. And while under Chase’s leadership, she showed intelligence in leaving traces of urine to be found on purpose and maneuvering on the side of the building to save Chase’s life by sliding her claws down the wall.
Old Leis' claws also show incredible sharpness, to such an extent that it can break through and cling to the wall. [eleven]
Connection with other Fugitives
Gertrude
Hertha discovered that she had a telepathic connection with Old Lace when the dinosaur stopped attacking the Fugitives because Hertha cried out in fear, “NO!” [3] In one of the Runaways' early encounters with Pride, Hertha also discovered that she had an empathic relationship with Old Lace when she experienced the same pain that Old Lace felt. [3] Hertha's telepathic connection with Old Leis allowed her to communicate directly with the dinosaur and order him to do whatever she wished. The connection worked in both directions, allowing Old Leck to transfer her thoughts directly to Hertha, but Old Leis could not give Herte a command in the same way. Old Leis was unconditionally loyal to Hertha, even before he fought against the team; Old Leys once attacked Niko without Hertha's orders, when Hertha and Niko had their short loss. [12] The sympathy of Hertha and Old Leys allows them to share not only thoughts, but also physical pain. If Gertrude is hurt, Old Leys will feel pain and vice versa. [13] That is why in issue 7, released in the 7th edition of Running, Gert refuses to fight Roy because she is allergic to bee stings, and she claims that even one sting on her can put an end to both of them. [14]
Chase
At the time of Gertrude's death, she transfers her psychic connection with Old Lace to her boyfriend Chase. [15] From now on, Old Leis becomes devoted to Chase. Chase uses Old Leis much more aggressively than Gertrude, ordering her to rip out the enemy's throat. [4] However, Old Leis did not follow Chase's order, just as she followed Hertha. Old Leis sometimes protests, and Chase must remind her that he is now responsible for her. [16] Just as with Gertrude, the psychic connection with Chase has the same drawback that if someone is injured, they both share the pain. [17]
Alex
Alex was the original leader of the Fugitives. He learned about the existence of the Old Lace before Gertrude and devised a plan for her to stumble upon the Old Lace as if by accident. [6] During the final battle with Pride, Gertrude tells Old Leis that if something happens to her, OL must obey Alex's commands. However, Gertrude does not know that Alex is a traitor to the team and actually works for Pride. Alex makes sure Gertrude is knocked out and takes control of the Old Lace. Old Lace follows Alex until Gertrude comes to life and immediately takes control of Old Lace again and turns the dinosaur against Alex. [6]
