Synopsis

Bill and his friends decide to come together and find a great home for this. So what if his rent is incredibly cheap and the owner is a little creepy? The wind blows, the floorboards creak, and the Doctor thinks that something is wrong. What is hidden in a strange tower in the heart of the house, and why is it impossible to get there? [2]

Story

Bill and five students (Shiren, Paul, Harry, Felicity and Paul) are in search of shared housing. They manage to pick up a roomy mansion at a very low price from one elderly homeowner. Bill asks the Doctor to help her with the move. To the horror of the girl, the time lord, who is winning the favor of Bill's friends, is disturbed by the many noises in the house, including tapping.

As night falls, the knocking intensifies, and Bill's comrades begin to disappear. All exits from the house are tightly sealed, preventing anyone from leaving, and the inhabitants are separated from each other. Bill and Shiren find Paul, half stuck in the wall, when the owner of the house appears, who, having hit the tuning fork , makes Paul completely disappear. The doctor discovers that the wooden parts of the structure are teeming with insect-like creatures, which he calls dryads . Together with Harry, they soon find evidence that every twenty years new students were brought into the house as food for dryads. The homeowner admits that he needs the help of these creatures to maintain the health of his daughter, Eliza.

Doctor and Bill meet in a tower where Eliza is completely woody. The doctor concludes that the landlord is actually Eliza’s son, which she had long forgotten about. As a child, he found in the garden and brought his terminally ill mother dormant dryads, unaware of their abilities. Hearing the high-frequency sounds made by the music box, they woke up and began to turn the woman into a tree in order to prevent the disease. Since then, the homeowner has managed dryads to maintain his mother’s condition, occasionally inviting new residents into the house, who become a source of food for the creatures. Eliza is horrified to learn that she has existed for so long without experiencing real life outside the home. Being able to control the dryads, Eliza orders the creatures to devour her along with the landlord, despite his objections, as well as return all Bill's friends back. The company manages to leave the house before it collapses on its own.

After returning to the university, the Doctor suggests that Nardol change him on duty at the Vault. To the sound of the piano coming from inside, the time lord opens the entrance to check the prisoner there.

In the opening scene of the series, the musical composition “Weird People” by Little Mix plays. Later in the episode, another song from the same group, “Black Magic”, sounds [3] . In addition, throughout the series, you can hear such classic works as the sonata for violin No. 1 in G minor of Bach and Beethoven's “ To Eliza ”, as well as the English folk song “Pop Goes the Weasel” [4] [5] .

Production

Along with the episode " Thin Ice ", the series entered the second film block. The script was read on July 18, 2016 [6] . The shooting took place in August 2016 [7] . The working title of the episode was “The Ghost House” [8] . The house rented by Bill with friends was Fields House in Newport , previously used for the filming of the series “ Don't Blink ” and “ Snowmen ” [9] .

As planned by screenwriter Mike Bartlett, one of Bill’s friends, Harry, is the grandson of the Fourth Doctor’s companion , Harry Sullivan. In the original version of the script, a reference was made to this, but in the end it was decided to cut it out, since Bartlett considered that viewers might not remember the companion who traveled with the Doctor 40 years ago [10] .
