It causes the formation of a brain-shaped galls from the host fungal hyphae on the surface of various parts of the fruiting bodies. The syzygospora fruit body itself is a thin film on the surface of the galls. Hyphae thin-walled, up to 3 microns wide, with buckles. Basidiums of narrow bicuspid form, 40–80 × 8–18 μm, with four or less sterigms up to 8 μm each. Spores are oblique-drop-shaped, 6–8 × 3–4.5 µm, often with oil droplets. Tree conidiophores with simple septa. Blastic conidia of two types: small ovate-spherical and large elongate-elliptical.
Found on the fruit bodies of Gymnopus dryophilus and Rhodocollybia butyracea .
