Biography
Born in Appleton (Wisconsin). [1] Nephew of Francis Willard , a well-known American public activist, feminist and suffragist, enlightener and reformer, [2] cousin of American director Bannister Mervyn.
Josiah lost his father early and was raised by his mother in Evanston (Illinois) . When he was 15, his mother and sisters went to Berlin , and Josiah was sent to study at a college in Illinois . Soon, he dropped out of school and left for Buffalo , where he got a job on the railway. Soon after quitting work, he began to wander and steal, went to prison, escaped, was arrested again, leads the life of a tramp again. Having become a fireman on an ocean liner, he went to Europe to his relatives, where in 1890-1895 he studied at the University of Berlin Friedrich Wilhelm , [1] where he met Robert Wood , later a famous American experimental physicist. [2] He traveled extensively in Europe, meeting such famous people as the Norwegian playwright Henryk Ibsen , the English poet Arthur Simons , the German scientist and politician Rudolf Virchow , the Scottish historian , and the American writer Gertrude Stein .
In 1896, Flint came to Russia to meet with Leo Tolstoy . Later, with the blessing of a great writer and a letter from the Minister of Railways of the Russian Empire, Prince M. I. Khilkov , addressed to the head of the Siberian Railway , Flint traveled around Russia for several months as a journalist. In 1897, having on hand a letter from St. Petersburg mayor General N.V. Kleigels, he traveled to Central Asia for 3 months.
Returning to the United States, he was a reporter, policeman, private investigator, and guard on the railroad. He became famous for his essays in Century Harper's Magazine and other magazines about wandering workers - “ hobo ”. In 1899 he published his first book, the “rogue” study “Wandering with Tramps ” ( Eng. Tramping with Tramps ), in which, among other things, he talked about his wanderings in Russia. His further work was devoted to describing the lives of vagabonds, as well as American crime, in particular, the merging of the underworld with the corrupt police and authorities. [3] In his books and essays, Flint was not limited to descriptions, but also classified vagrants, trying to generalize and understand how people become criminals, thereby showing a tendency to sociology .
He was friends with Jack London , who dedicated Flint a collection of autobiographical essays, The , published in 1907.
Josiah Flint Willard died in Chicago , [1] at the Kaiserhof Hotel in Clark Street, nearly surviving his 38th birthday from pneumonia, weighed down by alcoholism and cocaine addiction. His books are still being reprinted. [four]
