History

The Areopagus as the predecessor of the modern Supreme Court was formed in the 16th century BC by the Athenian king Theseus and the king of Attica Kecrops . The court was going on the rocky hill of Ares, in honor of which it got its name. In 462 BC much of the judicial and administrative power was distributed between the jury, helium , and the national assembly, the ecclesia . Such a structure was maintained in the Greek polis before the Roman conquest.

On October 16, 1834, the Areopagus was formed as the Supreme Court of Greece by decree of the Greek king. The final decision on the name was made in favor of the old predecessor, and not in favor of the traditional name in other states (Court of Cassation). The first appointments took place on January 13, 1835 by royal decree, the first chairman of the court was Christodoulos Klonaris, a juror from the city of Nafplion and the Minister of Justice in the government of John Kapodistrias . The first attorney general was appointed Andronikos Paekos, chairman of the interim court of Missolong . Among the famous areopagites were Anastasios Polizoidis (previously the chairman of the Nafplion interim court) and Judge Georgios Tertsetis , who sentenced Theodoros Kolokotronis .

On April 30, 1835, the first case was considered (1/1835), the decision was made on May 1. At the moment, the House of the Supreme Court is the house of Leoforos Alexandras, which was built by architect Jason Rizos and opened on February 23, 1981 [1] .
