AfriNIC operates as a member company of Local Internet Registry ( LIR ), each of which pays a membership fee. LIRs are usually played by large Internet service providers or corporations .
Before creating AfriNIC, IP addresses for the Africa region were issued by APNIC , ARIN, and RIPE NCC . ICANN agreed to the creation of the fifth RIR in October 2004. AfriNIC as a registry launched on February 22, 2005, and in April 2005 received final ICANN approval.
Internet resources are allocated according to AfriNIC procedures formalized in the relevant documents. Documents establishing procedures for working with resources are adopted by a meeting of members of AfriNIC - an open thematic forum held twice a year. Before submitting documents for voting, work is carried out on draft documents in working groups and discussion of projects in the AfriNIC open mailing lists.
AfriNIC is led by Alan Barrett, who is the managing director.
There is also a board of directors, which includes nine directors, including a managing director, six directors selected on a regional basis and two directors independent of the region.
The AfriNIC office is located in Port Louis , Mauritius .
