Content

History

Before the arrival of Europeans, the territory of the district was inhabited by representatives of the Indian tribe Abenaki [1] . The settlement, from which the city later grew, was founded on February 1, 1794 on the territory of the Sandy River Plantation [2] . In 1838, Farmington received the status of the administrative center of the newly formed Franklin County. In 1859, the terminal station of the Androscoggin Railway ( Androscoggin Railroad ) was built in the city [1] . In 1879, the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad section of the Sandy River –Lane Railroad was laid through the city.

Geography

The city is located in the southwestern part of the state, on the banks of the Sandy River River (left tributary of the Kennebeck River ), approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Augusta , the state’s administrative center. The absolute height is 121 meters above sea ​​level [3] .
According to the US Census Bureau , the city’s territory is 144.57 km², of which 144.18 km² is land and 0.39 km² (i.e. 0.27%) on the water surface.

Climate

Farmington has a humid continental climate ( Dfb in the Köppen climate classification ), with frosty, snowy winters and warm summers. The average annual rainfall is 1185.1 mm.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census , 7,760 people lived in Farmington (3,515 men and 4,245 women), 1,597 families, 3,072 households, and 3,441 housing units. The average population density was about 53.82 people per square kilometer [5] .
According to the census, the racial makeup of the city was as follows: 96.89% are white , 0.26% are African Americans , 0.41% are Native Americans, 0.35% are Asians , 0.08% are residents of Hawaii or Oceania, 0.28% are representatives of other races, 1.73% are two or more races. The number of Hispanic residents of any race was 1.29% [5] .
Of 3559 households, 23.1% raised children under the age of 18, 38.2% were married couples, in 9.9% of families women lived without husbands, in 3.9% of families men lived without wives , 48% did not have a family. 34.1% of the total number of families at the time of the census lived independently, while 13% were single elderly people aged 65 years and older. The average household size was 2.17 people, and the average family size was 2.75 people [5] .
The population of the city by age range according to the 2010 census was as follows: 16% - residents under 18 years old, 27.2% - between 18 and 24 years old, 18.3% - from 25 to 44 years old, 23.3% - from 45 to 64 years old and 15.5% - at the age of 65 years and older. The average age of residents was 32.1 years.
