Biography

Born in the family of a navigational assistant to non-commissioned officers [1] .

April 14, 1840 he graduated from the Cadet Navigation School with the production in the conductors of the Naval Naval Corps (KFSh) [1] .

Since 1841 he was enlisted in the Baltic Fleet. In 1845 he was promoted to ensign of the KFSh.

In 1851 he was appointed to the brig Diomede (commander of the 2nd rank captain V. M. Filippov ). On the brig, he took part in the work of the hydrographic expedition of the Baltic Sea in the Gulf of Finland and Riga [2] . In July 1853, the Highest View was held at the Kronstadt raid.

During the Crimean War , from 1854 to 1855, being on a brig, he participated in the defense of Sveaborg . In 1855 he was promoted to lieutenant of the KFSh. Yakov Timofeevich remained to serve on the "Diomede" until 1856 [1] .

On July 10, 1857, Yakov Timofeevich was appointed to the Siberian Flotilla as the navigational officer of the Novik corvette under the command of Lieutenant Captain F. G. Staal . On September 19, he traveled from Kronstadt around the Cape of Good Hope to the Far East to the mouth of the Amur as part of the 1st Amur detachment under the general command of captain 1st rank D. I. Kuznetsov [3] [4] .

In 1858 he was appointed naval officer for the Baikal transport under the command of V. M. Sukhomlin [1] .

 
Corvette America

In 1859 he was transferred to the America ship-corvette under the command of Captain-Lieutenant A. A. Boltin [5] . Since May 12, on the steamboat-corvette under the brady pennant , Count N. N. Muravyov-Amursky, Governor-General of Eastern Siberia, participated in the inventory of the coastline of southern Primorye [2] .

On June 17, while managing America, Yakov Timofeevich, on watch, introduced a steamboat-corvette into the bay, which was named by the decision of the Governor-General by the name of the squad's flagship - America (since 1972, Nakhodka Bay). Not risking to move on, since it was a rainy overcast day with low cloud cover, which did not allow to see everything clearly, it was decided after anchoring the depths to anchor at night. The next morning the Nakhodka Bay was opened and named. Later, in the same year, Astafyev personally supervised the inventory of the waters of this bay and bay [6] .

On the evening of June 19, a steamboat-corvette, accompanied by the Voyevoda corvette, first entered and anchored in Novgorod harbor, the inner bay of Posyet Bay. For several days, Yakov Timofeevich took measurements of the depths at the entrance to the harbor. Further, with the mission of Count N. N. Muravyov-Amursky, he visited Japan and China. Upon his return to Russia, he measured the depths of some sections along the coast of the western part of Peter the Great Bay near the Gamow Peninsula [7] .

In 1860 he was promoted to KFS and assigned as the commander of the schooner “ First ”, where until 1863 he was engaged in cargo and passenger transportation between ports of the Far East [7] .

At the beginning of 1863, Yakov Timofeevich returned to the Baltic with the appointment of the 9th naval crew. March 27, 1863 was promoted to headquarters captain of the KFSH with the transfer to the 1st Navy of His Imperial Highness Admiral-General crew [1] .

In 1867 he was transferred to the Black Sea Fleet in the 2nd His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh fleet crew [1] .

March 27, 1872 promoted to captain, and January 1, 1877, lieutenant colonels of the KFSh with enrollment in the lists of the reserve fleet [1] .

In 1877-1878 he participated in the Russian-Turkish war [1] .

It is known that Yakov Timofeevich died on April 14, 1879 and was buried in the Old City Cemetery on Pozharov in Sevastopol with his wife Astafyeva Maria Ivanovna [1] . But neither the place of his death nor the cause of the information is yet available.

Astafiev Bay

By the name of Astafyev are named:
