From 1971 to 1976, he studied Estonian philology at the University of Tartu . After graduation, and until 1987, he worked as an editor in a publishing house, as well as in various newspapers and literary magazines: in the newspaper of the University of Tartu (1974-1975), in the magazine Looming (1977-1986), in the newspapers Eesti Ekspress, "Eesti Aeg" and "Hommikuleht" (1991-1993) [2] . After that, he was a freelancer for a short time, then for two years he worked as a playwright at the Tallinn Theater for Young Spectators (now the City Theater ). In 1991-1992, Mutt was the head of the information bureau at the Estonian Foreign Ministry [3] .

From 1993 to 1997, Mutt was a freelancer. From 1997 to 2005, he was the editor-in-chief of the Sirp newspaper, and then from November 2005 to February 2016, he was the editor-in-chief of the major Estonian literary magazine Looming [4] .

Creativity

Mihkel Mutt has been publishing short stories, critical articles and essays since the 1970s. His first book, a short story collection The Disciple of Fabian, was published in 1980 and was praised by one of the critics as “pleasantly witty.” The same critic placed the author on a par with Vaino Waching , Mati Unt, and Jaak Yyeruyt [5] . In 1981, this collection received a prize to them. F. Touglas. Then another of his books followed: “Men” (1981), the satirical novel “Mice in the Wind” (1982), “Freeze” (1985), “Dear Generations” (1986), “Weeping Old Man Fabian” (1989) and others [ 2] .

His prose is distinguished by irony and satire. His novels are devoted to cultural, social and interpersonal problems, they are characterized by the author’s non-traditional acrimony [6] . Among the favorite topics of his work is the intelligentsia, in particular, the creative intelligentsia. He portrays it often grotesquely, self-ironically and somewhat autobiographically [2] . Thanks to his work, Mihkel Mutt quickly gained popularity in emigrant circles in Europe [7] .

Mihkel Mutt became the author of two books for children: Französisch! (1981) and Santa Claus (1986) about the problems of a modern family. The book "Französisch!" In 1986 was translated into Russian. The book "Santa Claus" in 1987 was awarded the prize. Yu. Smuula [2] .

He also made a name for himself as an essayist, political commentator, literary and theatrical critic and translator. Mutty's critical articles are distinguished by erudition and non-standard thinking, he also wrote parodies on theatrical themes. Mutt also wrote scripts in which the television movie “1991” and the television series “Salmona” were shot [2] . He also wrote travel essays about New Zealand , Mongolia , Sweden and England [4] .
