The National Museum of Indonesia ( Indonesia. Museum Nasional Indonesia ) is the central museum of the history and culture of Indonesia in Jakarta .

It was founded in 1778 by the Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences . The modern building, built in an elegant classic style, opened in 1868. In front of him on a high pedestal is a small bronze sculpture of an elephant, donated by King Siam Chulalongkorn in 1871 when he visited the museum (therefore the other name for the museum is the Elephant House) [1] .

State status since 1962. Since 2005, it has been managed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Over 140 thousand exhibits. Sections: prehistoric, classical archeology, ethnographic, ceramics, numismatics. There is a “golden room” with products made of precious stones and metals, including a bronze and gilded statue of Buddha Amitabha (9th c.). Until 1987, the museum kept part of the collections of the National Library, mainly ancient manuscripts. On Sundays, the museum hosts performances by the gamelan orchestra [2] .
