History
The first line of the Yokohama electric tram opened in July 1904. The length of the first was 5.6 km, it was served by twelve tram cars. Initially, the tram system was a private enterprise, but in 1920 it was municipalized. By that time, the total length of the network had reached forty kilometers.
In 1959, the network served 198 passenger trams (and ten service trams). At the time of maximum network development, there were thirteen tram routes in Yokohama. In the 1960s, the network began to shrink due to increased car traffic. By 1969, the tram fleet was reduced to one hundred and thirty wagons. The Yokohama tramway was closed on April 1, 1972.
Technical Features
The Yokohama tram was notable for its unusual gauge of 1372 mm. The voltage of the contact network was 600 volts. Another unusual feature was the 185-meter-long Mugita tram tunnel located next to the tram depot of the same name.
