Geography
Oeno is located 143 km northwest of Pitcairn Island . The atoll lagoon framed by an external reef connects to the ocean with two narrow passages. The diameter of the atoll is about 5 km, the total area is 16.65 km², of which 0.65 km² (land area) falls on five islands located in the central part of the lagoon. The largest of them is Oeno, it stretches from the southwest to the northeast for 2 km, its area is 0.5 km², the maximum height is less than 5 m above sea level, covered with woody vegetation. To the north of it is the second largest island - Sandy , which is a sand spit.
History
Oeno Island was discovered by Captain Henderson in 1819. American whalers carefully examined it five years later. In 1902, the island was annexed by Great Britain, and in 1938 it was administratively annexed to Pitcairn. Pitcairns sometimes visit Oeno to collect pandanus leaves, used to weave bags, or to relax on a small beach. Oeno has a bad reputation as the “father of shipwrecks” - dozens of ships have crashed off its coast over the years. Many crash victims made their way to Pitcairn in boats, often bringing with them various epidemics, thus multiplying unkind rumors about this place. Oeno can only be reached with a passing passenger or cargo ship or yacht.
Population
In June 2009, a group of artists from around the world, calling themselves the "Sunland project", announced plans to create a free settlement on the island of Oeno, an art colony similar to the Copenhagen-style Christiania . According to their allegations, they began negotiations with officials of the Pitcairn Islands [1] .
