Urban heat island ( heat island) is a meteorological phenomenon consisting in an increase in the temperature of urban space relative to the surrounding rural areas. It is mainly associated with significant changes in the environment in urban conditions, which caused the transformation of its properties: the ability to radiation (such as changing the structure of short- and long-wave radiation), thermal properties (for example, increasing thermal capacity ), aerodynamic (for example, reducing average wind speed) or moisture (for example, a decrease in relative humidity ). The most significant indicator of the intensity of a heat island is the temperature difference between the city and the suburbs. In large cities of America and Europe, it can reach (at maximum intensity, therefore, at night) up to 10-15 ° C.
The most striking example is the Tokyo heat island .
