History

The settlement from which the city later grew was founded in 1526 . The municipality of Pueblo Viejo was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1929 .

The city is located in the northern part of the department, on the coast of the Caribbean Sea , in the Magdalena River Delta, approximately 24 kilometers southwest of Santa Marta , the administrative center of the Magdalena Department. The absolute height is 0 meters above sea ​​level [1] .
The municipality of Pueblo Viejo borders in the west with the territory of the municipality of Sitionuevo , in the southwest with the municipality of Remolino , in the south with the municipality of El Retin , in the southeast with the municipality of Aracataca , in the east with the municipalities of Cienaga and Sona Bananaire , in the north it is washed by the waters of the Caribbean Sea. The area of ​​the municipality is 678 km² [2] .

According to the 2005 census, men made up 51.7% of the population of Pueblo Viejo, women - 48.3%, respectively. Racially, whites and mestizos accounted for 91.4% of the city's population; Negroes , mulattoes and Raysals - 8.6% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 73.9%.

Economics

The basis of the economy of Pueblo Viejo is fishing and agricultural production .
53.6% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 31.9% are service enterprises, 8.3% are industrial enterprises, 6.2% are enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .

Attractions

To the west of the city is the national park Isla de Salamanca .
