Club career
He began his career at the Lisburn Youth Academy, and also played Gaelic football for St. Paul's Lurgan [2] . From 2001 to 2004, he played for the Manchester United Football Academy .
Portsmouth
In 2004 he moved to Portsmouth [2] . The first years after moving to Portsmouth, Wilson spent in the reserve staff of the club, as well as in leases. In March 2006 he transferred to rent in Yeovil Town [3] . In 2007, he went on lease twice to Bournemouth , playing a total of 26 matches in the league and scoring 3 goals [4] [5] . In November 2007, went on short-term rental at Luton Town [6] .
July 7, 2008 Wilson signed a new contract with Portsmouth for three and a half years. On September 24, 2008 he made his debut in the club’s main team in the Football League Cup match against Chelsea [7] . On Boxing Day 2008, Wilson first appeared in the starting lineup in the Premier League in a game against West Ham United [8] . On August 5, 2009, press reports appeared of a skirmish between Wilson and his teammate David Nugent during a club’s preseason tour in Portugal. Both players were fined by the club and sent from the training camp to England [9] .
In the 2009/10 season, Wilson became the main player in Portsmouth. This season, the “pomp” dropped out of the Premier League, but reached the FA Cup final , in which they lost to Chelsea (Wilson missed the final due to injury). Mark spent most of the season as a central defender, but towards the end of the season he began to play as a central midfielder [10] . In February 2010, Wilson signed a new contract with the club until 2013. [11] After Portsmouth dropped out to the Championship, Wilson received a T-shirt with the number 6 from the club (he had previously performed under the number 35) and a captain's armband . At the age of 22, he became one of the youngest captains in the history of Portsmouth. However, on August 25, 2010, Pomp head coach Steve Cotterill announced that Wilson could leave the team because he is interested in Premier League clubs [12] .
Stoke City
On August 31, 2010, Wilson moved to Stoke City . He made his debut for the “potters” on September 13, 2010 in a match against the Birmingham club Aston Villa [13] . December 26, 2010 scored his first goal for the Stoke in the match against Blackburn Rovers [14] .
At Stoke City, Wilson became a universal player, speaking in three positions: central midfielder, right back and left back. In 2011, he helped the “potters” to reach the final of the FA Cup, playing in all matches of the team in this tournament. In the final, Stoke lost to Manchester City [15] . In the 2011/12 season, Wilson played as a left-back, and Tony Pulis called him “the unsung hero of the Stock” [16] .
On October 27, 2012, Mark received a fracture of the fibula in the game against Sunderland [17] . In the same month, he signed a new three-year contract with the club [16] . February 23, 2013 he returned to the field in a match against Fulham [18] . Stoke finished the season in 13th place, and Tony Pyulisa was replaced by Mark Hughes as head coach of the potters.
Wilson began the 2013/14 season as a central midfielder, but could not gain a foothold in the first team, and by December he began to enter the field as a central defender paired with Ryan Shawcross . "Stoke" finished the season in 9th place, which was the best result of the team in the league since 1975 [19] . The following season, Mark spent 30 matches for “potters”, and “Stoke” again finished in 9th place [20] . He became the only player in the “Stoke City”, who received a removal in the Premier League of that season: he was shown a red card by Craig Pawson in the game against Swansea City on May 2, 2015 [21] .
On January 30, 2016, in the FA Cup match against Crystal Palace , Wilson suffered a knee injury, due to which he missed the rest of the 2015/16 season, as well as the European Championship [22] [23] .
Before the start of the 2016/17 season, Wilson criticized the club’s head coach Mark Hughes in social networks, after which Hughes said that the Irish footballer would soon leave the club [24] .
Bournemouth
On August 15, 2016, Wilson moved to Bournemouth , signing a two-year contract with the club [25] . August 24, 2016 scored a goal in the Football League Cup match against Morkama [26] .
West Bromwich Albion
January 31, 2017 went on loan to the club " West Bromwich Albion " until the end of the season [27] .
Sunderland
August 31, 2017 moved to Sunderland as a free agent
Team Career
Mark Wilson has been the subject of a dispute between the Irish Football Association (representing Northern Ireland ) and the Football Association of Ireland (representing the Republic of Ireland ). In 2002, Mark played for the national team of Northern Ireland until the age of 15, but then began to play for the youth teams of the Republic of Ireland. In 2006, Wilson said: “I think every person has personal reasons why he wants to play for the national team of the Republic or for the national team of the North. I grew up a fan of the Republic, so for me it was an easy decision ” [28] .
On February 8, 2011, Wilson made his debut for Ireland's first national team in the Nations Cup match against Wales. [29] In January 2012, the new head coach of the Northern Ireland team, Michael O'Neill, invited Wilson to play for Northern Ireland, but Mark refused. [30] On October 16, 2012, Wilson scored his first goal for the Irish national team in a qualifying match for the World Cup against Faroe Islands with a long-range shot from 25 yards.
After joining the Martin O'Neill team, Wilson began to play in the position of the central defender. In the game against Latvia on November 15, 2013, Wilson made a connection in the center of defense with John O'Shea . The Irish won this match 3-0 [31] .
On May 23, 2016, Martin O'Neill included Wilson in the expanded squad of the Irish national team for the European Championship , but subsequently Wilson was injured and was unable to participate in the final part of the tournament [32] .
