In 2002, for the public visits of the head of the Catholic Church of Pope John Paul II, a new papamobile was developed based on the Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV.
The next “Papamobile” is equipped with a special glass bulletproof cabin with sliding windows, sitting in which the Pope can greet the people who meet him. In the back of this cabin there is a special reclining inclined plane, on which you can raise inward and lower the wheelchair for the head of the Catholic Church. Inside the cabin there is a special microphone and loudspeaker, with the help of which Dad can communicate with the driver or speak to the audience.
For this “Papamobile”, the usual M-Class SUV has undergone quite strong changes, which mainly affected the rear of the body. At the same time, the driver’s cabin and the 4.3-liter engine remained unchanged. At the same time, the suspension of the SUV was strengthened and became softer, to ensure maximum comfort for a single passenger. [2] [1]

2012 - Mercedes-Benz ML
In 2012, Mercedes-Benz presented the Vatican with a new Papamobile, created on the basis of the ML SUV (W166) . [3] The machine is designed by analogy with its predecessor: behind the front seats is a huge armored capsule, in which there is a seat for the Pontiff.
Seat
During his visit to Spain in 1982, John Paul II used a car based on the Seat Marbella (Panda). The car was unique and was used only once.
Star
Lancia
John Paul II also used the Lancia Thesis Giubileo .
Renault
On September 5, 2012, Renault donated two new electric vehicles to Benedict XVI . They were specially designed for the needs of the Pontiff and the Vatican gendarmerie based on the Renault Kangoo Maxi model [4] .
The current Pope Francis sometimes fundamentally refuses the papamobile during his public appearances to show how close he is to the people [5] .
Incidents
On June 6, 2007, during a trip of Pope Benedict XVI to his open white Fiat, a 27-year-old German citizen tried to jump. Dad wasn’t injured and probably didn’t even notice how the lawbreaker jumped over the fence and tried to cling to the popamobile on the go. At least 8 security officers interfered with the intruder and knocked him to the ground. The man was detained by the Vatican police and sent to a hospital for a psychiatric examination.
In 2011, a resident of the German city of Dortmund turned to the police when he saw that Pope Benedict XVI was riding in his “papamobile” unfastened. The incident occurred in the city of Freiburg during the September visit of the pontiff to Germany. According to the author of the complaint, the pontiff endangered not only his own life, but also the health of those around him. Soon, the complaint was rejected, as the risk of an accident was minimized [6] .
Cultural Image
Papamobile can be seen in many episodes of the animated series " Papal Town ". One of the series (the ninth episode of the first season) is even completely dedicated to him: the papal car went on a trip to Rome , was repainted, stolen, etc.
Also, the image of the Papamobile was used by the creators of the second part of the cartoon " Cars ". According to the plot, the Papamobile visits the second stage of world races, which take place in the Italian resort of Porto Corsa.
