Biography

Charles Talbot was the only son of Francis Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, from his second marriage. [3] The future statesman was named after King Charles II , who was his godfather. In 1667, Francis Talbot was killed in a duel, his son inherited the title of Count. Lord Shrewsbury was originally a Catholic, but in 1679 he adopted Protestantism . It is also worth noting that this figure at the same time has an interest in theology [4] .

After the death of Charles II in 1685 , the new king was showered with the graces of the Earl of Shrewsbury. But due to pressure from the monarch in 1687, Charles Talbot left the service [4] . In 1688, Charles Talbot participated in a conspiracy against Jacob II [5] . He was one of seven influential people who invited William, Prince of Orange, to the throne of England [6] .

After the victory of the Glorious Revolution, the Earl of Shrewsbury held the most important government posts. In 1694 he was granted the title of Duke of Shrewsbury [4] .

During the reign of Queen Anne, Shrewsbury also held important government posts. In 1714, Anna even appointed Shrewsbury as Lord Treasurer [4] . But soon the queen died and Talbot lost his former influence.

The Duke of Shrewsbury died on February 1, 1718 [7] in his London house [7] .

Charles Shrewsbury has been married since 1705 to Adelchid Palliotti (July 24, 1660 - June 29, 1726), the daughter of Andrea Palliotti and Mary Cristina Dudley, the fifth daughter of Carlo Dudley, the titular Duke of Northumberland (1614–1686). Their marriage was childless.

After the death of Charles Talbot, the title of Duke of Shrewsbury was interrupted, and the titles of Earl of Shrewsbury and Earl of Waterford were inherited by his cousin, Gilbert Talbot, 13th Earl of Shrewsbury (1673-1743), the eldest son of the Honorable Gilbert Talbot (1631-1702), and grandson 10th Earl of Shrewsbury .
