Biography
The son of poor peasants, began working in 1934 as a teacher. During the Civil War in Spain, he was arrested for sympathy for the republican movement, and he was banned from teaching. In 1945 he received the right to teach at the University of Laguna.
Since 1933, Regulo began to study Esperanto. Since 1945, he gave Esperanto courses at the university, where he then created a special department - the first in Spain. In 1952, he founded Editorial Stafeto, the largest source for world literature in Esperanto, known for its high quality. Over the next quarter century, he translated works of art by major world authors into Esperanto.
His second work - “La bapto de caro Vladimir” ( Esper. Baptism of Prince Vladimir ), a translation of the poem of Czech satire Karel Gavlicek-Borovsky, became a cause for scandal, since the chairman of the Federation of Esperantists of Spain demanded not to publish the work as a satire on the Franco regime. Regulo refused, despite threats, and was soon fired. After his dismissal, La Laguna University published a commemorative collection, “Serta gratulatoria in honorem Juan Régulo”, which included the works of Juan Regulo Perez in Spanish, Esperanto and other languages on literature, geography, philology, anthropology and history.
