History

The company was founded in April 1917 by Adolf Bernard under the name Etablissements Adolphe Bernard . Initially engaged in the licensed release of SPAD fighters. After World War I, it was reorganized into Société Industrielle des Métaux et du Bois ("SIMB"), which was not associated with aviation until 1922, when the corresponding department was formed under the leadership of designer Jean Hubert .

In 1927 , the company went bankrupt , but was recreated as Société des Avions Bernard (SAB). Then she led a small-scale production of passenger liners for CIDNA airline and built record aircraft, in particular, to participate in competitions for the Schneider Cup . However, it was her advanced technologies, which were somewhat ahead of time, that prevented greater commercial success.

The expansion that was outlined in 1935 after the acquisition of Hydravions Louis Schreck FBA did not take place in connection with the French government's nationalization of aircraft manufacturing companies that same year, which led to another bankruptcy.

In 1937, on the basis of the purchased assets, one Marcel Chassagni created Capra ( Compagnie anonyme de production et réalisation aéronautique ), which produces subcontracting components for airline companies. In 1941, it was renamed “ Matra ” and further works under this name, successively joining Lagardere , Aérospatiale and now EADS .
