The Mountain Mari
Mountain Mari Akpars is revered and considered a hero.
The motto of the mountain cheremis is associated with the name of Akpars: “Akpars mӱlӓndӹm maktenӓ!” (“Praise the land of Akpars!”)
“The lands of Akpars” (“Akpars mӓlӓndӓvlӓzhӹ”) in the Mountain Mari language is a stable expression, means the lands inhabited by Mountain Mari.
Mountain Regiment
Mountain Regiment - A regiment led by Akpars. Consisted of Chuvash, Mari and Mordovians. Akpars was baptized and Orthodox, so an eight-pointed cross on a white background was depicted on the banner of the Mountain Regiment. Also on the sides of the banner was a national Mari pattern. Kovash, Yanygit, Toksubay and Tokpay distinguished themselves in the Akpars regiment.
Legends of Akpars
The most famous are two legends about the hero.
The legend of Tsar Ivan IV is preserved. He lived for several days in the village of Nujenaly (where Akpars came from), hunted in the forests. “For the happy outcome of the war, begun through the excitement of the Cheremis intercessors,” Ivan the Terrible presented Akpars with four things: a silver (according to some sources, a gold) cup on which was depicted an eagle, a saddle, a saber and a horse. The bowl donated to Akpars was kept for a long time in the Elasovskaya church (according to some reports - until the XIX century) [3] .
The second legend tells about the difficult capture of Kazan, where Akpars showed himself as a strategist. He decided to blow up the fortress by making a dig. Before digging, he found out the distance to the wall. When the digging was completed, 48 powder kegs were brought in and candles were placed (one of them was placed at the entrance). There was no explosion. Because of this, Ivan the Terrible accused and forced to execute Akpars. But soon Akpars explained why there was no explosion, and only received a letter from the king: “do not oppress the Maris, don’t give them to the boyars and governors, do not attach them, but live freely on their land and pay only a certain yasak for every Mari hunter, come of age. "
